CARRIE STERLING

Growing up alongside the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania deepened my relationship with the Appalachian landscapes, the abstract, barn stars, and the art of fraktur. My paintings are intended to serve as an expression of inner states of being and how they collide with the ongoing need for community and belonging. The watercolors, oil paintings, and dyes that I use are often made with items that I’ve foraged for and are painted frantically in the tradition of Spiritualist and outsider artists, while also acknowledging the long-standing tradition that is Pennsylvania folk art. I hope that my paintings listen deeply to what surrounds them while they commune with both the unknown and the known.
